Last week, a coach for a little league football team in Sacramento, California was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in state prison for intending to distribute cocaine.
Nakia “Keith” Owens was pulled over by police in October 2005 for not having license plates or visible registration on his car. When police checked the inside of the vehicle, they found a bag with marijuana, as well as a sock with crack cocaine in it. Both items were found inside an equipment bag marked as belonging to the Sacramento Raiders youth football team. In fact, Owens admitted to police that he was the little-league coach during the search of the car.
Owens was a passenger in the vehicle, but he was under what is referred to as “searchable probation.” He was also wanted for several vehicular violations.
Thankfully, the children involved with this little-league team weren’t outwardly harmed by their coach’s actions; however, a drug test and background check, including a motor vehicle records, would have been prudent.

WOW. So he didn’t deal to the kids on the team? That’s the good news I guess!
Well…the Raiders aren’t exactly known for their upstanding players or coaches. Haha.
In all seriousness, that sucks for the kids. I’m glad he wasn’t dealing to them…probably just their parents.
Gad – what if he was transporting those kids in his car? Is it too much to ask for a background check, especially with how inexpensive and easy they are to do?
This guy should be tossed in Jail for a long time. I didn’t know that you should keep your crack cocaine in your sock.
I’ll bet the kids were in on it. No one suspects the kids.
So the cops see these guys and immediately decide to search them. (I’m guessing he looks like a sleaze bag). The little league hires this guy as a coach and doesn’t check him out? (I’m guessing he looks like a sleaze bag.)
I think this is clearly just a case of lacking intelligence. There was nothing coach-worthy about this guy. I remember looking up to my coaches when I was a little kid – they were good dudes. Is this what the future has in store for my kids?
Yet another reason that anyone dealing with children, in or out of school, should have a background check done. Maybe someone should start a PTCC (Parents to Coaches Committee). This committee should be in charge of screening all coaches, volunteers and anyone else that deals with children. If we are not going to protect the children of today what is our tomorrow going to look like?
Okay, I really don’t have anything to say about this other than…
I’m glad that this genius, who drove around in an unlicensed car while carrying crack and pot in it, is no longer driving a 1-ton killing machine on the streets of Sacramento. Priceless.
Wow. His sock. Clever.
