Youth Coach with Felony Record

Nicky Lay is a flag-football coach in Newaygo, Michigan. He is also currently on probation after pleading guilty to his third offense of operating a vehicle while intoxicated or impaired.

Upon finding out about his criminal record, some team members’ parents contacted a local news station to voice their concerns, mainly that Lay is not a good role model to their children.

Dan Durst, the president of the youth football league has stated that the league does not run background checks on coaches; however, they do check their names with the sex offender registry and are satisfied with that check.

Lay has declined to comment and has asked that any questions be brought to the league. Durst has said that the league will not take any action unless concerns are brought to it by a parent, which has not happened thus far.

Third offense? That’s ridiculous! And that’s what a background check is for and why it should be done. Everyone deserves a second chance…but not a fourth one. Good grief.

i think it is fair that the parents be concerned about this mans record, but if it is not affecting his coaching, i dont see why he should be removed from coaching.

I wouldn’t want my children coached by someone who has not undergone a background check, much LESS a habitual drunk driver!!! What is WRONG with that organization?

I do think that some people learn from their mistakes and can teach a good leason to children of the path not to take. I think that he should be monitored at all times and should do a lot of community service to teach children not to do what he has done.

Marionchen is right, this DUI-coach has a grater chance of harming those young athletes. If my child were in that team, either the coach goes or my child goes.

If the parents were so concerned, why did they go to the local news? Sounds like they are just out for fame rather than the safety of their children. The guy is an idiot, not a perverted criminal, he needs to have his license taken away but that doesn’t mean he is a bad person.

Old-fashioned me likes to view coaches and teachers as potential role models for our kids. This coach certainly would not be one.
