Brevard County Florida Coach Fails Background Check; Arrested for Giving Alcohol to Minors

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

A volunteer assistant coach at Titusville High School in Titusville, Florida failed a background check, but was allowed to coach. Jeff Weaver, 52, was arrested on April 26th, 2008 on 30 counts of supplying alcohol to minors at a party in his home. Approximately 30-40 minors were in attendance at this party.

All volunteer coaches in Florida are required to register with the school district and undergo a background check. The check includes fingerprinting that is sent to the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Weaver had been coaching for two years before the school district ran his background check in February of 2008. They notified the high school of his failure to pass on March 26th, but Weaver continued to coach. There is currently an investigation researching this breakdown in communication between the high school and the district office. Wes Sumner, district spokesman, stated, “We are working with Titusville High to get to the bottom of where this occurred.”

Weaver failed the background check due to pending charges against him. Our staff was able to quickly find a former misdemeanor at Public Background Checks. Weaver was arrested last December for battery against a police officer, resisting arrest with violence, aggravated assault and domestic violence. In September of 2002, he was also arrested on charges of battery and domestic violence, but was not convicted.

Weaver will face the alcohol charges as well as charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and one charge of an open house party. The juveniles at the party have not yet been charged, but Titusville police spokesman, Todd Hutchinson, said those charges may be forthcoming.
