Kentucky Little League Volunteer Arrested on Child Pornography Charges

Ronald Underwood was arrested March 29, 2008 and charged with possession of child pornography, criminal attempt of unlawful use of a minor in a sexual performance and unlawful use of an electronic device to entice a minor.

Underwood had served as treasurer, volunteered to keep score and sometimes called the games for the little league in Louisville Kentucky. He had been doing so for more than 20 years.

Police began an investigation due to a tip they received regarding Underwood’s Myspace page. The police set up a fake Myspace account posing as a young boy and then contacted Underwood. Detective Dan Jackman of the Louisville Metro Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit stated, “Almost immediately after he befriended us online, his communication became sexual in nature.” Police also found child pornography on Underwood’s computer and are trying to identify the victims.

The Little League is not stating whether or not Underwood had undergone a background check, but one source noted that no background check was ever run because Underwood had been with the Little League for such a long time.

This is such a perfect example of why it is beneficial to run background checks not only before an applicant is hired, but on a continual basis. Many companies and organizations have begun running background checks on their employees and volunteers on an annual basis.
