Public Input Sought on NJ Coach’s Background Checks

Monday, December 10th, 2007

The town of Hammonton, New Jersey, is looking for public input about background checks for coaches and wants your opinion as to whether or not to run them. The town’s proposal to run background checks on about 350 coaches seems over-thought and argued to the point of a deadlock.

The proposal has been discussed on as many as four separate occasions by the Hammond Recreation Commission and was recently presented (for the second time) for the Town Council’s consideration.
Hammonton Mayor John DiDonato, unsatisfied by the time wasted deliberating, decided to do the democratic thing and put the issue to public opinion at the next Town Hall meeting on December 17th at 7pm.
“We’ll dedicate a portion of our next meeting for someone who wants to talk about it,” DiDonato said. Perhaps it’s just me, but it seems that every time a decision like this is made about money (and I’m assuming this one is no different), more money is lost deliberating the issue than would otherwise be saved.
If you have an opinion on the matter, the Mayor says that any and all opinions will be heard at the meeting.
