Oklahoma State University coach fumes at reporter.

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Oklahoma State University coach Mike Grundy recently “lost it” over a local sports reporter. Grundy was photographed screaming at a post-game crowd gathered for a press conference gathered after OSU’s 49-45 victory over Texas Tech.

What has Grundy so upset is an article that was recently published in an Oklahoma newspaper. Oklahoman columnist Jenni Carlson launched a scathing attack on 21-year old back-up quarterback Bobby Reid. Carlson suggested that Reid was considering transferring, that he doesn’t have the “fire in his belly” for football, and even suggested that he wants to be “coddled, babied, perhaps even fed chicken” by his mother.

While most agree that Carlson’s article was harsh, we have to keep in mind that Reid is a Division I athlete, with NFL aspirations, and should, honestly get used to the criticism.

The real issue at hand here is Coach Mike Grundy’s reaction to the situation, allegedly screaming at fans and reporters assembled for a post-game press conference. Good Morning American ran a piece wondering if the coach’s tirade was “Out of Bounds”

Gundy’s 31/2-minute speech spread quickly over the Internet, with video Web site YouTube recording more than 75,000 views of the video. As one fan put it, “One has to wonder about Grundy’s violent temper” adding “that guy’s crazy”.

Milford starts checks on coaches

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Milford, Connecticut is considering making its after-school coaches undergo background checks after Robert Dulan, a high school basketball coach was sentenced to almost two years in prison for having a sexual relationship with a teen player.

Shockingly though, a Connecticut superior court judge ruled that Dulan will be allowed to continue coaching. “You can’t have miscellaneous people at school,” said parent Courtney Wojnarowski. “These are your children; you need to protect them as much as you can” According to accusations, Dulan began the three-year affair after coaching the high school student during a summer basketball camp.

The policy would affect 300 people and cost $25 each. “We should protect our kids. Parks and Recreation has a stipend for the leagues, maybe we should encourage these leagues to use the stipend for that,” said Alderman Kerrie Rowland. “When you’re dealing with youth sports, it’s all volunteers,” she said. “It can’t be on the city. That’s not fair to the city or the taxpayers. We all have to work together. If parents get involved themselves, we will all be better.”

Basketball coach arrested for sexual assault

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

A volunteer basketball coach for the Amateur Athletic Union in Yakima, WA has been arrested after one of his 13-year-old players reported that the coach had sexually assaulted him.

The 46-year-old, who is preparing to be charged on Wednesday, also served as a volunteer coach for a ninth-grade football team last year.
According to police, the boy told investigators that he was sexually assaulted by his basketball coach on four separate occasions earlier this year. The first allegedly took place in Oregon during a team road trip from Reno, in May, and twice at the coach’s home. According to police, the most recent took place while the boy was sleeping in the same bed as his coach’s son in a hotel room during a family trip to a theme park in August.

AAU Yakima Director Paul Campbell said the suspect was registered AAU coach for the past four or five years. Campbell also said the AAU last year ran background checks on all of its Washington state coaches and found 31 of about 7,000 had felony records. Cases like this serve to underline the need for thorough background checks on all volunteers and coaches, no matter the cost.
