A little League coach in Sacramento, CA was booked this week on charges of lewd acts with a child.
According to the Amador County Sheriff’s Department, Richard Toby Tinoco, 29 was brought in after police learned that he had molested a boy that was a family acquaintance while camping over the Memorial Day weekend. After police learned about Tinoco’s status of a Little League coach, working with 7 and 8 years olds, detectives said that they wanted to move quickly, to prevent more harm from being done.
League President Claude Thurston said that he was “stunned” by the news, calling Tinoco “a family guy” and insisted that background checks had been run on Tinoco. Upon investigation, however, Tinoco’s record shows the following convictions: misdemeanor sex registration violation (2002); statuatory rape (1998); felony methamphetamine possession (1998) and felony false imprisonment (1997).
Tinoco remains in jail on $500,000 bail. His next court dates are scheduled for July 19 and 20 at the Amador County Courthouse.
This case emphasizes the need for thorough background checks for everyone, even “family guys” that seem harmless.
